Life at MVTC
Residential Life
Residential life at MVTC is carefully constructed and supervised
Dorms & Facilities
While the foundation of the Mountain Valley Treatment Center experience is the holistic, therapeutic approach to wellness, one could argue that the cornerstone of the program can be found in our small dormitories where residents reside during their stay with us. Living in either single or double rooms on a picturesque 25-acre property, Mountain Valley’s residents enjoy an atmosphere that has a familial rather than an institutional feel.
Exposure Therapy
Our supportive and well-trained residential counselors work closely with our therapists to ensure that the residents’ daily routine is purposeful, consistent with their treatment goals, and safe. Exposure Therapy takes place throughout the day, from the kitchen – where residents and staff alike prepare meals – to nearby Mt. Moosilauke, where our residents challenge themselves, literally and figuratively, to achieve new heights.
Experiential Education
Experiential Education programming enjoyed by our residents includes fitness, helping hands, farm-to-table, therapeutic recreation, yoga, mindfulness, and art.
At Mountain Valley, we do our best to simplify life to help residents understand the differences between actual and perceived needs. We are an “unplugged” campus and access to the Internet is limited to therapeutic or academic work.
Farming & Food
Lunch and dinner are served family-style to emphasize the importance of social interaction. Employing organic and sustainable practices, residents participate in the year-round cultivation (and consumption) of the foods we raise on our campus. As a member with the non-profit Upper Valley Stewardship Center, Mountain Valley residents have access to conservation land and animals that they help to raise. By working with these gentle animals, our residents are challenged to overcome their fears in a bucolic New England country setting.
Outdoor Adventure
Our relationship with the Upper Valley Stewardship Center allows us to utilize the land for outdoor recreation and includes a high ropes course, trails for snowshoeing, mountain biking, running and hiking. Seasonally, residents utilize the high and low ropes elements, giving our trained staff the opportunity to use experiential education as an effective tool for helping our residents challenge fears and overcome worry.
Weekend Activities
Weekends at Mountain Valley are filled with off-campus excursions that combine adventure, culture, and fun. Such trips and activities help to empower our residents to rediscover a social life devoid of the powerful grip of anxiety.
