Clinical and Educational Considerations to Prepare For the Fall

Mountain Valley Treatment Center is excited to partner with Academics West to offer a workshop (1.5 CEs) on the key concerns we are facing as we return to our new normal this fall. This will be a zoom workshop, open to all, on Tuesday April 20, 2021 at 7:00pm.

After almost two years of interrupted and on-line schooling, our young people will be returning to in-person learning and a sense of normalcy this September. How do we, as professionals and parents, help support our children as they re-enter this new world? All data suggests that there has been a rise in anxiety, isolation, and other mental health issues throughout the pandemic, what are some skills and strategies we can start utilizing now to ameliorate these concerns.

Dr. Tim DiGiacomo, PsyD, Clinical Director of MVTC and Dr. Evan Flamenbaum, MA, DSW, Head of School at Academics West, will be sharing their thoughts on the educational and clinical concerns as we move towards the fall. They will share Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Executive Functioning techniques and strategies that might assist in this difficult transition.

New York Times Magazine Article Featuring MVTC Still Resonating with Readers

Despite it being almost two years since publication, the October 2017 New York Times Magazine article featuring Mountain Valley with its cover story still resonates with readers and, thanks to online searches by distraught parents looking for help for their anxious, avoidant adolescents, still prompts weekly phone calls to the MVTC admissions office.

The article, Why Are More American Teenagers Than Ever Suffering From Severe Anxiety?, was written by Benoit Denizet-Lewis, a best-selling author, and a tenured professor of writing, literature and publishing at Emerson College. Over the course of the twelve months that Denizet-Lewis devoted to the writing of the article, he tracked two Mountain Valley residents, Jake and Jillian, from MVTC’s then campus in Pike, NH to the University of North-Carolina and a public high school in Florida, respectively, with the hope of finding out if parents, therapists and schools are helping  anxious teenagers by protecting them or pushing them to face their fears. Mountain Valley, a program that specializes in the latter, was the perfect place for Denizet-Lewis to test his hypothesis.

Denizet-Lewis’s masterfully crafted piece went on to become the most read New York Times Magazine article of 2017. In addition, it gave birth to a firestorm of other media coverage, including interviews on NPR and XM Radio. Benoit has also been generous with his time, and has represented MVTC at parent and alumni gatherings in New York.

Referencing the New York Times Magazine Article Featuring MVTC, a UCONN Grad Student Writes About Anxiety

Taylor Hudak, 22, of Guilford, CT, a master’s student in the Integrated Bachelor’s/Master’s Program at University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education, recently wrote an Op-Ed piece in the Hartford Courant – and made reference to the October 2017 New York Times Magazine article featuring Mountain Valley.

It is not a question if overachievers will burn out or break down, but when. A recent New York Times article showcased students who required intensive therapy and medication to cope with the college application process or the fear of failure. Students are making themselves physically sick over fear of a B+. They exist in a constant fight-or-flight state over their academic performance, resulting in stomach issues, headaches, anxiety, depression and even suicide.
